The Inn

Set in a beautifully renovated mid-1800’s Greek Revival home in Kennebunk’s Lower Village, the Inn at English Meadows is the perfect setting for your southern Maine getaway. The Inn is conveniently located within an easy half mile walk to Dock Square in Kennebunkport, and just a mile from Kennebunk’s sandy beaches, an ideal spot away from the high season bustle and crowds, but within walking distance of all of Kennebunkport’s attractions. Offering top notch service and luxurious lodging, this bed and breakfast is a unique combination of contemporary furnishings and décor which is paired with charming original features.

With its tranquil, romantic atmosphere, The Inn at English Meadows is best suited for adult getaways.  The Bungalow cottage on site works well for small families or up to four friends traveling together, and some guest rooms can accommodate a child traveling with parents. Dogs are welcome to vacation with their owners in two of the Inn’s accommodations with advance notice.

The Rooms

The Inn’s seven guest rooms, four suites and two-bedroom cottage are tastefully decorated to reflect the comfortable, modern style of the inn. Many of the accommodations feature gas fireplaces and all have in-room temperature control, including air conditioning in the summer months.

Accommodations vary in size and attributes, each uniquely decorated in the fresh modern style characteristic of the inn. The Serenity room and the Tack Room Suite boast luxurious oversized walk-in showers with multiple jets. Soaking tubs with showers are found in the Sunrise, Morning Dawn, and Sea Glass rooms and the Carriage House Suite. The Carriage House Suite and Bungalow cottage can accommodate more than two adults traveling together. Additionally, their kitchenettes offer microwaves, refrigerators, and toaster ovens. Each of these accommodations offer private outdoor space as well:  a private balcony in The Carriage House Suite, and a lovely screened-in porch in the Bungalow. A dog may stay with its owners in the Tack Room Suite and Bungalow cottage with advance notice and an additional fee.

The Breakfast

Breakfast at the Inn at English Meadows will surely be one of the highlights of your stay. The full service, three-course breakfast is prepared daily and artfully presented by Elizabeth and her talented kitchen staff using quality, fresh ingredients, often with fresh herbs and vegetables from the Inn’s gardens. All baked goods, including some amazing afternoon cookies, are made from scratch in the inn’s bright and spacious gourmet kitchen. From May through October, weather permitting, breakfast is served outdoors on a sunny brick patio, surrounded by flowering planters and the herb garden. The Inn also has two indoor dining rooms, one which seats up to 8 at a large family-style table, the other with 4 cozier tables providing more intimate seating for 2 or 4. Indoors or out, the tables are set with the same careful attention to detail with crisp linen napkins and fine serve ware.

The Innkeeper

Diane owns the inn with her brother and sister in law and comes from a background in corporate marketing. When looking to become part of the Maine hospitality lifestyle, she initially purchased The Lighthouse Inn in York Beach, followed by the West End Inn, a beautiful inn in Portland's West End neighborhood.

Diane is managing the day to day running of the inn alongside her successful career in hospitality real estate practice with The Swan Agency.

The Common Areas

Inside and out, guests enjoy plenty of space for relaxation, quiet talks and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers. Elizabeth has brought an authentic seacoast feeling to the inn’s common areas, with contemporary coastal themed artwork which she continues to curate with local artists and artisans.

The inn offers two tastefully decorated living rooms with fireplaces, where guests can relax with morning coffee or afternoon tea and freshly baked cookies, curl up on the sofa with a favorite book, or play a game at the coffee table.

The inn’s sunny brick patio, used for breakfast service in the morning, is available for guest use the rest of the day and evening. Porch rockers invite guests to have a seat on the adjacent deck, a relaxing spot to enjoy a cup of coffee before breakfast or a refreshing adult beverage after a day at the beach.

The Gardens

A particularly notable feature of the Inn at English Meadows is its lovely garden setting. Guests returning to the inn after a day spent exploring Kennebunkport’s nearby shops, restaurants, galleries and seaside adventures are pleased to find themselves in such quiet and tranquil surroundings. With over an acre of rolling lawns and thoughtfully planted flowering shrubs and perennial beds, the inn’s beautiful gardens provide an oasis-like feeling. Depending on the season, visitors may encounter soft apple blossoms, striking rhododendron, Maine lupines, daylilies, peonies and of course fragrant and abundant rugosa: sea roses.

A cozy garden table for two, arranged under a sprawling ancient crab apple tree, and just in front of a burning bush which glows red in the fall, is a romantic spot to enjoy a carry-out meal from a nearby restaurant or a bottle of wine from the Inn’s cellar. Pairs of Adirondack chairs and a fire table with seating for four are arranged around the back yard, inviting guests to sit with a glass of wine and a book, watch and listen to the birds flitting about, or just enjoy each other’s company.
